NLC SECOND ROUND POSTPONED
Rain had a say in the second round of the Northern Lakes Conference Girls Tennis Championships Thursday afternoon.
Intermittent rain soaked the Concord courts for part of the second round, then finally stopped action with three courts still to finish. Those courts will finish Friday at Plymouth ahead of the final round, which will determine placings and champions for each of the five courts as well as the team champion.
On the winner’s side of the draws, Concord’s Regan Landis reached the final in the No. 1 singles grid with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Northridge’s Riley Wheatley. Her opponent will be either Reegan Miller of NorthWood or Kyla Heckaman of Plymouth, their match suspended with Miller up 4-2 in the second set and a set in hand after winning the first 7-5.
At No. 2, Meghan Godzisz of Concord posted a 6-0, 6-2 win over Brynne Gayler of Northridge to make the championship, and will be awaiting a finalist as NorthWood’s Alex Jesse and Plymouth’s Miranda German were also suspended in the second set. German leads 1-0 after a 6-4 first set win, and at 5-5 in the second set, German is up 40-love.
At No. 3 singles, Plymouth’s Aubrey Vervynckt and Goshen’s Madi Rittenhouse advanced to the championship, Vervynckt a 6-2, 6-0 winner over Northridge’s Taylin Cress and Rittenhouse a 6-4, 6-0 winner against NorthWood’s Gretchen Adams. The third suspended match of the night was in this bracket, where the backdraw matchup between Wawasee’s Elizabeth Kleopfer and Warsaw’s Rachel Boyle was halted in the second set. A score was not provided to that match.
At No. 1 doubles, Concord and Plymouth will square off in the final, the Minuteman duo of Keegan Thursby and Lauren Pollock a 6-1, 6-0 winner against Warsaw’s Rachel Yeager and Raegan Merchant, and the Pilgrim duo of Mary Beatty and Audie Plothow a 6-1, 7-6 (4) winner against Goshen’s Brooke Grewe and Kathryn Detwiler.
At No. 2 doubles, Concord and Plymouth again will battle for the title, with Concord’s Kelsee O’Dell and Kaylee Price a 6-2, 6-0 winner against NorthWood’s Caroline Mullet and Kate Stillson, and Plymouth’s Olive Stanton and Sydni Weir a 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 winner over Warsaw’s Maddie Ray and Amy Herendeen.
