Police Say Squatters Stole From Vacationing Home Owners
WARSAW — A Warsaw man is accused of stealing from home owners while the couple were on vacation.
Brent Alan Blackburn, 27, 1121 E. Wellington Dr., Warsaw, is charged with two counts of theft, both level 6 felonies.
According to a report from the Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Office, a Kosciusko County couple told police they were gone on vacation for about a month beginning in December of 2018 and when they returned, they found Blackburn and his wife living in their residence.
Police said the home owners called to report theft and said when they came back from vacation and found the couple living in their house, they also noticed that a bedroom door that had been locked was opened with the lock broken. They reported jewelry, $1,200 in cash, a computer, DVD games, headphones and other items had been taken from the room.
The home owners told police that Blackburn and his wife had subsequently moved in with a relative of Blackburn. That relative told police that Blackburn and his wife had already moved out, but had left items in his house that police say were reported stolen by the vacationing couple.
Police reported tracking down evidence that Blackburn and his wife had sold some of the stolen items to a pawn shop.
