Wawasee, Central Both Bow Out
HUNTINGTON – Saturday became the final show for the last of the gymnasts left from the area in the IHSAA Gymnastics Regional.
The team from Elkhart Central, both Wawasee individuals and the lone gymnast from Plymouth all were eliminated at the Huntington North Regional Saturday afternoon.
Wawasee’s senior duo of Jada Parzygnot and Alyssa Minnix landed outside the top 10 in their conquests. Parzygnot’s 8.475 on floor was among a tough scoring day for the event, where the top score was a 9.175 by all-around champion Catherine Milne of Homestead. Only four scores cracked the 9-level, Parzygnot’s score tied for 13th overall. Minnix tied Central’s Ellie Dobson for 17th on bars with an 8.05, also well shy of the top-six needed to qualify. Milne also led the bars competitors with a 9.175.
Central scored just a 97.8 after hitting 104 last week at the Wawasee sectional, falling to sixth in the team standings. None of its competitors cracked the top 10 in any of the events, Dobson the closest with an 11th-place score of 9.325 on vault. Top finishers for the Blazers included Mia Echatera with an 8.1 on bars and 8.45 on floor, Karli Reveal with a 7.65 on beam, and its lone all-arounder, Rylee Damewood, scored 32.025 to finish 13th in the tally.
Plymouth’s Kyla Heckaman was also at work at the regional as an all-arounder and was 11th with a 33.025.
Fort Wayne Carroll, behind a beam title from Ashelynn Steinke at 9.375, won the team title with a 107.75. Milne won the all-around title with a 37.025 and helped Homestead to a runner-up finish in the team scores with a 106. Angola claimed the third-place team score and final state ticket with a 104.9. Fort Wayne Dwenger was fourth at 103.9, followed by DeKalb, which did have Shiloh Miller win the vault title at 9.6, with a 102.9 team score for fifth and Central was sixth.
The IHSAA Gymnastics State Finals will take place next Saturday at Noblesville High School.
