Dragons Down Trojans, End Sectional Drought
BOURBON — Argos ran out to a 10-0 lead from the tip-off, and that wound up being the final margin in a 47-37 win over host Triton in the Sectional 51 championship at the Trojan Trench Saturday night.
The Trojans were able to hold the Dragons down significantly from the previous night’s output of 78 points in a win over Oregon-Davis, but they still couldn’t keep pace with Argos’ one-two punch of Sam Manikowski and Ian Kindig. Manikowski finished with 16 points earned mostly on the strength of 12-of-13 free throw shooting, while Kindig scored on 5 of 7 shots from the floor en route to 11 points as Argos scored at a 15-of-24 (62.5 percent) team clip.
Triton got 12 points from Jared Bules, who finished 4-of-3 from beyond the arc, and another 11 from Tye Orsund, who also led his team offensively in Friday night’s semifinal win over South Central (Union Mills). Freshman Ashton Oviedo was held to three points on 1-of-6 shooting but passed out five assists for the Trojans (10-14).
While Triton loses six seniors, including Orsund and standout shooting guard Beau Hepler, Argos (21-4) moves on to the regional round of the state tournament, also to be held at Triton. Saturday’s win represented the 10th straight for the Dragons but was the team’s first sectional title since winning back-to-back championships in 2004-05.
