Safe Haven Assists With Third Baby Surrender
WOODBURN — A third baby has been surrendered legally to authorities with assistance through Safe Haven Baby Boxes.
The child was surrendered to a Woodburn Fire Department firefighter and successfully surrendered under the Indiana Safe Haven Law, a news release said. Woodburn is located east of Fort Wayne near the Ohio state line.
A mother turned over her baby last week in Columbia City, according to a news release issued by Safe Haven Baby Boxes.
Earlier this month, a baby was surrendered in Kosciusko County where Warsaw City Council and fire officials approved plans on Feb. 19 to install a baby box in a fire station in Warsaw.
Safe Haven Baby Boxes uses counselors to work with mothers who are unsure if they want to keep their newborns and have a hotline they are promoting. The Woodburn-based non-profit has worked with about a half dozen communities to establish baby boxers for anonymous drop-offs. The boxes are viewed as a last resort option.
“The swift actions of this firefighter and the Woodburn Fire Department personnel was exceptional, and we commend them on their professional dedication to this newborn and its mother,” said Monica Kelsey, director of Safe Haven Baby Box in a prepared news release.
