Purdue Extension To Offer Livestock And Poultry 101 Classes
KOSCIUSKO — Are you interested in raising livestock or poultry on any scale, from small scale to 4-H to large production? If your answer is yes or maybe you are still considering the option, then Livestock and Poultry 101: A Beginner’s Guide is the program designed just for you.
It is being offered on Mondays, March 11, 18, 25 and Thursday, March 28. Sessions will be held at the Purdue Extension Office in Kosciusko County at 202 W. Main St., Warsaw, beginning at 6:30 p.m.
The series will cover various aspects of livestock and poultry production in order to raise healthy livestock and poultry for personal use or as a commercial business. The first two sessions on March 11 and 18 will serve as the general sessions to provide background information pertaining to livestock and poultry species such as swine, beef cattle, goats, sheep, horses, rabbits, cavies and poultry. The purpose of each species will be discussed and reviewed. In addition, the general sessions will focus on veterinary care, animal nutrition, marketing, budgeting, animal behavior and well-being, and zoning among other topics. The sessions will also provide attendees with resources for livestock and poultry production.
After completing the first two general sessions, participants may then choose to participate in additional sessions that focus on specific sessions. Poultry will be offered at 6:30 p.m. Monday, March 25. Then, at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, March 28, one more species-specific session will be offered on beef cattle.
Registration for the first two general sessions is $35. This includes both general sessions, all handouts, resources and refreshments. Participants must complete and participate in both general sessions in order to attend either species session. The individual species sessions are $10 per session for either the poultry or beef session. The registration deadline is Thursday, March 7.
