WARSAW – Warsaw competed at home for the first time this season, but ran into a very talented Homestead side. The Spartans used quality performances from Catherine Milne and Yana Weir to build a 107.7-101.475 victory over the Tigers.

Milne hung a state-level score Tuesday night, finishing with a 37.625 all-around while Weir wasn’t far behind at 36.275. Warsaw didn’t have anything to that level, its top score was a 34.925 from Remi Beckham, then down to a 32.85 from Daylen Turner. While the spread between the two teams was significant, Warsaw coach Tonya Douglass wasn’t the least bit worried.

“This is only our third meet of the season and we went into tonight’s meet wanting to improve our score and do the best we can do,” Douglass said. “Homestead is a good team and does very well. We do enjoy seeing them each year and like see how they are doing. Our goal is always to try to close the gap as much as we can with Homestead. They bring some talent and skills so it was nice to see some of our girls place tonight. We improved our team score from Plymouth (last Saturday’s invitational) so that is nice to see and it looks like we are moving in the right direction.”

One of Douglass’ stated preseason goals for the Tigers was to eclipse 100 team points per meet and keep elevating, and thus far, Warsaw has done that. After hanging a 97 in its first dual at East Noble last week, Warsaw went 101.1 at Plymouth and now a 101.475. While Milne and Weir took seven of the eight top twos for the night, Beckham slipped in second on floor at 9.425 in one of her best floor scores. Beckham also scored 8.35 on beam, 8.4 on bars and 8.75 on vault.

Adree Beckham posted competitive scores as well, going 8.7 on vault and 8.8 on floor. Turner also scored 8.7 on vault in her top score of the evening and Sydni Purvis continued to improve as a freshman with an 8.4 on vault and 8.45 on beam, the beam score third overall in the meet.

“I saw improvement in some scores,” Douglass said. “We are clean in most areas but just need to clean up a few extra steps and hops and start sticking our landings. Beam did hurt us tonight. Only had two out of the five stick routines and had some bobbles as well. I told the girls tonight we can be over 102 easily if stick our vaults and we stay on the beam. Overall I am pleased where we are at right now. The girls know what needs to be done and are focused to improve their scores as well as the team score.”

Milne scored 9.65 on floor and 9.6 on beam while Weir went 9.5 on beam and 9.125 on floor among the highlights for Homestead. The Spartans earned fifth in the state last year, with Milne finishing seventh in the state in all-around.

Warsaw (0-2) is scheduled to compete again Saturday at East Noble in a trio with the Knights and Plymouth.
