NORTHRIDGE BOYS 98, WARSAW 82
NORTHRIDGE GIRLS 144, WARSAW 42
Warsaw’s boys and girls swim teams both fell to visiting Northern Lakes Conference powerhouse Northridge Thursday, the boys by a competitive 98-82 margin and the Lady Tigers by a remote 144-42 decision.
“We always say that winning and losing isn’t the end goal in this sport at this time of year, it’s about getting better,” explained Warsaw head coach Tony DeBrota. “Today we saw some really good kids, and Northridge has a very strong team and put us in our place a little bit. Just staying positive for us and focusing on each race, not the other person and what they are doing — that’s the message we want the kids to take out of a meet like today.”
The Tigers won a total of three events at the dual. Grant Knight collected a top finish in the breaststroke with a 59.74 stop, while Alex Cook (51.62) and Michael Ray (52.65) finished one-two in the 100 freestyle, and Kevin Fisher and Matteo Viera placed one-two, respectively, in the 1-meter dive with scores of 116.05 and 103.15.
Cook and Knight combined with Nick Bazzoni and Nathan Taylor for second-place in the medley relay (1:47.36), Cook (22.73) and Knight (22.78) were also two-three in the 50 free, Ray (52.65) placed second behind Cook in the 100 free, and Knight, Ray, Cook and Zach LaLonde were second in the 200 free relay (1:31.49). LaLonde (1:00.25) was second in the backstroke, and Ray, Taylor, LaLonde and Bazzoni finished second in the 400 free relay (3:34.48).
The Lady Tigers were unable to win an event but had three runner-up finishes at the meet. Delaney Wihebrink placed second in both the breaststroke (1:09.24) and the 100 free (56.12), and she combined with Carolina Pazos Fernandez, Taylor Gunter and Olivia Herman in the medley relay (1:59.83). Herman placed third in the 50 free (25.78), and Gunter was third in the butterfly (1:06.58).
Although top finishes were few and far between for the hosts, the Tigers did have numerous lifetime bests as they continued to find the best fits for swimmers.
“This is a good time of year for us to try some stuff, especially when you have an opponent like Northridge that is so good in everything. They will tell you how good you are,” DeBrota said. “And we have to remember the whole goal is these meets is to prepare for the championship season. Who works in what relays, who looks good as individuals. It’s all piecing the puzzle together.”
Warsaw will head to Goshen Saturday for an NLC double dual that will also include Elkhart Memorial.
