Warsaw Man Arrested After Using Counterfeit Bill At Ace Hardware
NORTH WEBSTER — A Warsaw man was arrested after using a counterfeit $50 bill at Ace Hardware.
Derrick Scott Gasaway, 27, 4335 E. CR 725S, Warsaw, is being charged with counterfeiting, a level 6 felony.
On Aug. 13, an officer with the North Webster Police Department responded to a report of a counterfeit bill used at Ace Hardware. The store manager said on Aug. 12, a subject had used a counterfeit $50 bill. The bill was actually a $10 bill made to appear to be a $50 bill.
According to the affidavit of probable cause, the manager provided the officer with the transaction receipt for two cans of spray paint paid for with the counterfeit $50 bill and the subject received $32.90 back in change.
Security video of the transaction showed a male subject presenting the counterfeit $50 bill and leaving in a 2000 maroon Oldsmobile.
On Aug. 21, the officer conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle. The operator of the vehicle was a female subject. She advised that on Aug. 13, she was at Ace Hardware with her friend, Gasaway. The officer then showed the female a photograph from the Ace Hardware security video and she identified the subject pictured as Gasaway.
The officer asked for Gasaway’s phone number and what he had purchased at Ace Hardware. The officer then called Gasaway. During conversation, Gasaway said the female came to his residence and said that the officer had shown her a photograph of him using a counterfeit $50 bill.
Gasaway was booked in the Kosciusko County Jail on Nov. 1, with a $5,750 surety and cash bond.
