Familiar Faces Return As Boilers
SOUTH BEND – A host of former Northern Lakes Conference swimmers returned to northern Indiana as Boilers Friday afternoon.
Purdue traveled to Notre Dame Friday for a men’s and women’s dual swim meet at the Rolf Aquatic Center, and with it brought five former NLC superstars in tow. Three Wawasee graduates in senior Breanna Robinson, sophomore Paige Miller and freshman Brady Robinson along with Northridge graduates in sophomore Katie Hughes and freshman Sydnee Emerson all competed for the Boilers against the Irish.
Breanna Robinson, in her fourth year swimming for the Boilers, started the day swimming the butterfly leg of the 200 medley relay, helping her ‘B’ unit to a third-place time of 1:43.48. She was also fifth in the 200 backstroke at 2:01.51 and sixth in the 100 backstroke at 56.02 in her workload for the day.
Emerson also got into three events, working to sixth-place finishes in each of the 100 breaststroke (2:04.75), the 200 breaststroke (2:22.04) and the 200 individual medley (2:08.70).
Miller took part in two events, starting her day with a fourth-place finish in the 1,000 freestyle at 10:27.46, narrowly missing third by a half stroke, and then helping the Purdue ‘D’ relay to a 3:36.74 in the 400 free relay.
Hughes was active in one event Friday, going 5:06.99 in the 500 freestyle to finish seventh.
No. 13 Notre Dame would go on to win 12 of the 16 scored events to claim a 190-110 win over Purdue in the team standings.
Brady Robinson saw work in three events for the Boilers, his best showing a sixth-place finish of 3:11.01 with his ‘C’ relay mates in the 400 free relay. Robinson also finished seventh in the 200 backstroke at 1:56.31 and eighth in the 100 backstroke at 53.56.
No. 25 Purdue won three of the first four events, only for No. 18 Notre Dame to rally late, sweeping the 200 breaststroke and 200 IM to win the team standings 168-132. The Irish won nine events to Purdue’s seven, Purdue taking five of the top six spots in diving without Olympian Steele Johnson active. Johnson is listed as a redshirt senior this year after competing and earning silver in Rio two years ago.
This was Purdue’s only trip through the area, and will compete again Nov. 2 at home against Tennessee and Wisconsin, the Tennessee men rank No. 15 and Wisconsin men rank No. 24 while the Tennessee women rank No. 24 and Wisconsin women rank No. 14.
