‘Copacabana’ Delights Audiences
NAPPANEE — The curtain opens. The lights come up. The stage is empty except for a piano and drums in one corner and Stephen (Paul Rigano, the Round Barn Theatre’s musical director) seated at the piano trying to put a song together.
It just doesn’t jell. Enter his wife, Samantha (Tess Colby), who reminds him her parents will be there shortly and they are going out to celebrate their wedding anniversary.
Stephen, however, is deep into his song and lets his mind wander, taking him back in time … .
Meet Lola. Meet Tony. Meet Rico. All are on stage at Amish Acre’s Round Barn Theatre in Nappanee as “Copacabana” comes to life. Lola LaMar (Colby) is a singer. Tony (Rigano) is a song writer. Rico Castelli (Ryan Schisler) is a gangster from Havana.
Colby is making her debut at Amish Acres this summer. As Lola her talent shows. She is terrific. Rigano is making his debut on stage but has been behind the scenes of the theatre for a few years.
Schisler has become a Round Barn favorite and anyone who sees “Copacabana” understands why. He turns in another first rate performance.
Lola and Tony are each trying to get a break in the entertainment world but nothing is working out for either of them. This is done via the “Audition Montague,” featuring Lola, Tony and a male auditioner, who isn’t seen on stage but is gives rejection after rejection — this provides fun for all and is loved by the audience. Tony immediately falls in love with Lola and tries to do all he can to help her advance her career.
Both make their mark at Manhattan’s Copacabana lounge.
Rico and Conchita Alverez (Olilva Manlove) arrive at the lounge. He likes what he sees when Lola is on stage and invites her to his table after sending Conchita off with his henchman. Rico plies Lola with champaign and takes her to Havana to perform in his night club. He rejects his long-time star Conchita and wants to replace her with Lola. Both women object. Conchita wants to kep her job and Lola wants to go home.
Manlove proves to be a perfectionist as the Cuban entertainer. She seems tireless during “Havana/Caramba,” with the Torpicana dancers to back her up and shows her resistance when Rico wants Lola to preform “El Bravo,” which had been her number.
Adding to the fun are Gladys (Emily Whitley) and Sam Silver ( Dion Stover). Gladys is the cigar girl at the Copacabana and Sam is the boss. A gold star for Whitley. She is terrific. Stover, who is not a newcomer to the Round Barn stage, adds his own touch of humor as he turns in a superior performance.
Back in Manhatten the Copacabana people discover that Rico has taken Lola. Tony decides to go after her. Gladys convinces Sam he should go, too, much to his objections.
When Tony and Sam arrive in Havana they have to figure out how can they get Lola away from Rico. Soon help arrives and a plan is hatched.
Adding their own personal touches to the musical are McMAnus (Travis Bird) and Willie (Dalton Tyler Isaac). Both turn in great performances as they do the biddings of others.
Members of the ensemble are Akira Watanabe, Vilot Race, Matty Reda, Max Mattox, Jack DuVall-Early, SarahLeigh Beason, Amelia Southerland and Patrick O’Keef. They are all first-rate and the costume changes keep them busy.
Can Tony and Sam rescue Lola? What happens to Rico? Will Stephen ever get ready for dinner? “Copabana” answers these questions and more.
