Yergler Closes Career As State Runner-Up
INDIANAPOLIS – It was some career for Maddie Yergler.
The South Bend St. Joseph’s tennis star saw her prep career end with a runner-up finish at the State Finals Saturday.
Providence junior Halli Trinkle topped Yergler 7-6 (7-2), 3-6, 6-0 in the title match between No. 1 singles standouts at the Indianapolis Racquet Club. The match was moved indoors due to threatening weather.
Yergler, who lost in straight sets to Trinkle a year ago in the team semifinals of the State Finals, led 5-2 in the first set. Trinkle came back and won the key first set in a tiebreaker.
Yergler defeated Ross Pastoret of Michigan City Marquette Catholic 6-3, 6-1 in a semfinal match earlier Saturday contested at Park Tudor High School.
Yergler had a remarkable four year career for the Indians. She led St. Joe to three straight semistate team championships the last three seasons. The Indians lost 3-2 to Brownsburg in the quarterfinal round of the State Finals this year.
Yergler also made history as she became the first ever player from the Northern Indiana Conference to earn MVP honors all four years.
Yergler will play next season at DePaul University.
