Summer Reading At The North Webster Community Public Library
NORTH WEBSTER — Area schools will soon be out for the summer, giving kids a break from the school year routine. However, summer shouldn’t mean a break from learning. It can be a time of discovering new interests and the pleasure of reading just for fun. The Summer Reading Program at North Webster Community Public Library makes reading fun with prizes, special events and hands-on activities.
Starting June 1, youth ages birth through high school can sign up for the Summer Reading Program and start earning prizes for every five hours of reading they complete. Children too young to read can earn prizes by having an adult or older child read to them. In addition to earning prizes for reading, kids can earn extra credit toward prizes by attending the many activities and special events held each day including entertaining headline shows at 10:30 a.m. every Wednesday While some activities require advance registration to attend, the Wednesday shows are open to all children. A complete schedule of summer events is available at the youth services desk or online at www.nweb.lib.in.us/youth.
Studies have shown that students who read throughout the summer experience less summer learning loss and build a background of knowledge that better prepares them for the challenges of a new school year in the fall. Get the kids motivated to read and bring them to the library for a summer full of reading fun.
The kids aren’t the only ones having fun this summer. Registrations are currently being accepted for the next craft-a-card workshop at 10:30 a.m. Friday, June 8, with Wrenay Kann providing instruction for making three summer greeting cards. Cost is $10 and includes all supplies. Then the next day 10:30 a.m. Saturday, June 9, Karla Hayden returns for another coffee and canvas. Participants will be painting a 12” x 12” decorative sunflower wood piece. Cost is $20 and includes all supplies. For adults only, both classes require advance registration with non-refundable payment due when registering.
Keep abreast of events and programs going on at the library this summer by signing up for the library’s text club. Using your cell phone, send the text message “library” to the number 36000 and start receiving text notifications of upcoming programs, events and announcements.
The library will be closed Monday, May 28, to commemorate Memorial Day.
