Tennis Sectional Pairings Set
The Warsaw girls tennis team will be in a familiar spot when it hits the courts for postseason play later this week.
The Tigers will once again be big time favorites to win another sectional championship.
Warsaw, along with 308 other teams statewide, found out their postseason path earlier tonight as the IHSAA held the draw for the 44th state tournament series.
Sectional play is slated to begin Wednesday with title matches set for Friday. Regionals are May 22-23 with semistates May 26 and the State Finals June 1-2.
Warsaw, which sports a 11-3 record, will face Tippecanoe Valley in a semifinal match Thursday of its own five-team sectional. The Tigers did not face the Vikings during the regular season. Warsaw did beat Wawasee 5-0 and Columbia City 4-1 during regular-season play.
Warsaw has won 17 straight sectional championships, which is tied for the fifth longest current streak in the state. Munster has won 41 sectional titles in a row. The Warsaw program owns 27 total sectionals, tied for the seventh most in state history.
The Tigers, who went 7-0 to claim the NLC regular-season title, are led by seniors Liza Lewis and Ella Knight at the top two spots of their impressive singles lineup. The duo have lead Warsaw to two straight regional championships in 2016 and 2017. Lewis was the No. 1 singles champion at the NLC Tourney, which wrapped up on Friday. The Tigers finished in third place in the tourney behind champion Concord and runner-up Plymouth.
Wawasee will face Whitko in the opening match at Warsaw Wednesday. The Warriors beat the Wildcats 4-1 Monday night with wins in straight sets on the No. 1 and 2 singles courts and both doubles courts. The youthful Wawasee team is now 6-10 on the season.
Triton drew a tough one right out of the gate at the Bremen Sectional. The Trojans must face favorite Plymouth in the opener Wednesday. The Pilgrims have won three straight sectional crowns and 16 of the last 17 sectional titles. Plymouth owns 32 total sectional titles.
NorthWood is the defending champion in the field at the Goshen Sectional. The Panthers, who have won three sectional titles in program history, face Bethany Christian in a semifinal match Thursday. NorthWood is led by its No. 1 doubles team of seniors Kennedy Wiens and Betsy Nunemaker. The pair placed third in the NLC Tournament.
The Warsaw Sectional winner advances to the Culver Academy Regional to face the winner of the Peru Sectional in a semifinal. The Bremen Sectional champion will play the winner of the Culver Academy Sectional in the other regional semifinals.
The Goshen Sectional champion moves on to the Northridge Regional to play the Angola Sectional champion. The West Noble Sectional winner faces the Northridge Sectional champion in the other semifinal.
