Valley Sports Wrap: April 30
Softball
Tippecanoe Valley’s softball team lost a 7-4 Three Rivers Conference contest at Manchester Monday night.
The Lady Squires committed five errors but tallied 10 hits to Valley’s five in the win, jumping on top with three runs in the first and adding another run in the second. Jordan Krotke drove in two runs, and Amy Baca, Kirsten Prater, Kayla Scott and Kirstyn Yoder all scored for the Lady Vikings in the sixth as they rallied to cut their deficit to 5-4, but Manchester responded with two more runs in the bottom half of the inning and held on for the win.
Sydney Howard took the pitching loss, giving up 10 hits and a walk for six earned runs while going the distance. Mattie McKee got the win surrendering five hits and five walks with 10 Ks in a complete-game victory. Ali Sites collected three hits — including a triple — two runs and two RBIs for Manchester, which moved to 6-7 and 2-2 in the TRC.
Valley dipped to 3-9 and 2-2 in conference play. The Vikings return to play Wednesday at Wabash.
Baseball
Tippecanoe Valley’s baseball team jumped on top not once but twice with a run in the top of the first and four more in the second, but host Manchester responded with a six-run second then broke it open with four more in the fourth on the way to an 11-6 Three Rivers Conference win.
Manchester’s six-run second came courtesy of an error, two hit batsmen, a squeeze bunt from Brayden Lassiter, two doubles by Grant Strobel and Mason Meyer and a single by Jeremiah Airgood. Airgood, Fluke, Lassiter and Hayes Sturtsman each collected hits during the Squires’ four-run fourth.
Strobel recorded three hits and three RBI at the dish and earned the win on the mound giving up seven hits with one walk versus nine strikeouts for six runs — only three earned — lasting through six. Sturtsman closed the game, giving up one hit while striking out three.
Adam Myers finished with three hits and an RBI, and Wes Melanson doubled as part of a three-RBI night for Valley. Layne Prater took the pitching loss, giving up eight hits and two walks for 10 runs, all earned, in 3 1/3 innings.
Manchester moves to 4-5 overall and 3-1 in the TRC and will host SouthWood Wednesday.
Valley slides to 2-11 with an 0-4 TRC mark and will play at Wabash Wednesday.
Middle school track
Tippecanoe Valley’s boys track and field teams both beat Rochester, while the girls both fell short of the Zebras Monday night.
Valley’s eighth grade boys beat Rochester by a remote 77-23 margin. Rex Kirchenstien earned wins in the 100 and 200, Wade Melanson won both throwing events, Brandon McBriar was tops in both the 800 and the 1600, and Dawson Perkins won both the high jul and the 400-meter dash.
The sixth/ seventh grade Vikings won their meet, 58-47. Robert Wilson won the 110 hurdles, the 200 hurdles and the long jump. Karl Parker won the 100 and 200 ashes, and Zach Burke topped the standings in both throwing events.
Valley’s eighth grade girls fell 72-34. Chloe Shepherd won the discus and was second in the shot, and Kaydence Shepherd won the long jump and was send in the 400.
Valley’s sixth/ seven grade girls lost 77-19. Chesnee Miller won’t he 1600 and was second in the long jump. Erika Henderson broke tape int he 100 hurdles.
