Officers with the Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department responded to a shooting at the Leesburg gravel pit on Sunday, April 1. Upon arrival, they discovered Colby Kuczewski on the ground and his grandfather Buddy Kuczewski presented officers with a handgun. Two females, Colby’s grandmother and Colby’s girlfriend, were also at the scene.
The girlfriend told officers that Colby was driving her and another female into the sand at the gravel pit. The vehicle got stuck and Colby called Buddy to bring a vehicle to pull them out. While waiting, Colby became angry and the other female attempted to calm him down. Colby pushed the female to the ground and began hitting her.
The girlfriend further advised that when Colby’s grandparents arrived, another physical altercation occurred between Colby and the female. Colby became angry with his grandmother and knocked her to the ground. Colby then pushed Buddy to the ground and began striking him. Colby was able to remove a knife from Buddy’s pants and began yelling at Buddy to kill him and shoot him. Colby pushed his grandmother down again and that is when Buddy shot him in the leg.
Officers spoke with Buddy who gave a very similar story as Colby’s girlfriend. Buddy stated that when he arrived at the gravel pit, the female was laying on the ground in a fetal position being battered by Colby. Colby struck Buddy in the face and told him “I’m going to take your gun, kill you and kill myself.” Buddy fired his handgun into the air, which made Colby more aggressive and agitated. Buddy then shot Colby in the upper right thigh. The officer was able to observe an abrasion behind Buddy’s left ear.
The female complained of pain from the altercation and was transported from the scene for her injuries. Medical reports indicate that she suffered bruising and pain to her ribs. Colby was airlifted from the scene due to his injuries but has since been released from the hospital.
Colby was booked into the Kosciusko County Jail on April 10 with a $5,250 surety and cash bond.
