Officers with the Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department investigated the following accidents:
7:10 a.m. Sunday, March 4, East US30, west of Van Ness Road. Driver: Justin R. Teel, 29, Deerfield Path, Warsaw. Tell was driving west on US30 when a deer entered the roadway, bounced off another vehicle, and into the path of Teel’s vehicle. Damage up to $10,000.
11:58 p.m. Saturday, March 3, East US30, west of South CR 450E, Warsaw. Driver: Timothy C. Gensch, 19, South Washington Street, Pierceton. Mensch was driving east on US30 when a deer entered the roadway. Mensch’s vehicle struck the deer. Damage up to $5,000.
6:00 a.m. Saturday, March 3, South SR19, north of West CR 600S, Mentone. Driver: Layne A. Wagoner, 30, West CR 1400N, Silver Lake. Wagoner was driving south on SR19 when a deer ran into the roadway. Wagoner’s vehicle struck the deer. Damage up to $5,000.
5:53 p.m. Friday, March 2, North CR 900W, south of West CR 700N, Etna Green. Driver: Jeremy A. Hartzell, 35, East Van Buren Street, Nappanee. Hartnell was driving north on CR 900W when he lost control of his vehicle and left the roadway. Hartzell’s vehicle ramped a small gravel driveway of a residence and went airborne, landing on its tires. The vehicle ended up overturned on its roof and struck a large tree. Fire and EMS advised on scene that Hartzell was deceased. A passenger in Hartzell’s vehicle, Nicholas A. Pelc, complained of pain all over his body and was transported to Lutheran Hospital Fort Wayne with unknown injuries. Damage up to $25,000.
6:19 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 27, North SR13, near East CR 500N, North Webster. Drivers: Kelly A. Ernest, 51, East South Barbee Drive, Pierceton, and Angie Zellers, 31, South Harrison Street, Stuart, IA. Ernest’s vehicle’s engine stopped running, causing the lights to stop working on her vehicle. Kellers didn’t see Ernest’s stopped vehicle until it was too late to avoid crashing into the rear of Ernest’s vehicle. Damage up to $5,000.
12:02 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 28, South Huntington Street, north of East Bowser Road. Drivers: Anthony W. Chestnut, 40, North SR13 A, Syracuse, and Jennifer A. Base, 36, North Main Street, Syracuse. Chestnut said the traffic light was green when he looked, and next thing he knew, it was red. Chestnut’s vehicle struck Base’s in the center middle. Base complained of pain on her chest from the seat belt. She was released by medics at the scene. Damage up to $10,000.

Officers with the Syracuse Police Department investigated the following accident:
5:31 p.m. Sunday, March 4, South Huntington Street, north of East Baltimore Street. Drivers: Matthew L. Rensberger, 26, West Catholic Street, Pierceton, and Dylan M. Williamson, 18, East Main Street, Atwood. Rensberger was driving north on Huntington Street when he looked out his window, looked back to the road and saw that the vehicles in front of him were slowing down. Rensberger’s vehicle was unable to avoid hitting Williamson’s vehicle in the rear. Damage up to $2,500.
Warsaw
Officers with the Warsaw Police Department investigated the following accidents:
6:39 p.m. Sunday, March 4, US30, near North Parker Street. Drivers: Chase P. Trumble, 27, West 250 S. 84, Warsaw, and Jose A. Matamoros-Martinez, 29, North Oak Street, Columbia City. Trumble’s vehicle was following behind Matamoros-Martinez’s vehicle east on US30. A traffic signal turned yellow, and Trumble stated that he thought Matamoros-Martinez was going to go through the yellow light. Matamoros-Martinez’s vehicle started braking, and Trumble’s vehicle couldn’t stop before a rear-end collision occurred. Damage up to $10,000.
4:39 a.m. Sunday, March 4, US30, east of Springhill Road. Driver: Castille K. Dewells, 31, South Wolf Road, Columbia City. Dewells was driving west on US30 when he saw a deer standing in the roadway. Dewells attempted to change lanes, but the deer ran in front of his vehicle. Damage up to $5,000.
7:16 p.m. Saturday, March 3, Provident Drive, near Dubois Drive. Drivers: Britt L. Calentine, 43, Prairie Drive, Syracuse, and Taylor A. Cardwell, 21, Brookview Drive, Warsaw. Calentine was driving east on Dubois Drive when she started to make a left turn and collided with Cardwell’s vehicle. Damage up to $5,000.
3:52 p.m. Saturday, March 3, 1000 Husky Trail. Driver: Justin M. Hodorek, 27, Silver Thorne Way, Carmel. Hodorek’s vehicle was backing into a parking space at Menards and forgot that his vehicle was equipped with a hitch receiver in the rear. The hitch receiver made contact with the front bumper of a parked vehicle. Damage up to $2,500.
12:34 p.m. Saturday, March 3, 3611 Commerce Drive. Drivers: Ryan D. Swing, 36, Buck Trail, Warsaw, and Jackson R. Wolkins, 17, Robson Road, Winona Lake. Swing’s vehicle was parked at McDonald’s. Swing began to back up his vehicle to allow another vehicle room to exit a parking space. Swing struck Wolkins’ vehicle, which was in the travel portion of the parking lot. Damage up to $2,500.
12:19 p.m. Saturday, March 3, Short Ridge Drive, south of La Vista. Driver: Byron Gagnon, 49, Stoneborough Street, Las Vegas, Nev. Gagnon was backing out of a driveway and did not see an unoccupied, parked vehicle behind him on the roadway. Damage up to $2,500.
3:29 p.m. Friday, March 2, East Center and North Hickory streets, Warsaw. Drivers: Nancy Gibson, 70, Levi Lee Road, Warsaw, and Derek Bradley, 42, Lincoln Drive, Warsaw. Gibson’s foot slipped off the brake peddle while stopped at the intersection and her vehicle rear-ended Bradley’s vehicle. Damages up to $2,500.
Winona Lake
Officers with the Winona Lake Police Department investigated the following accident:
12:58 a.m. Saturday, March 3, 302 7th Street. Driver: Grace E. Miller, 18, South Country Club Road, Warsaw. Miller was parked in the Grace College parking lot when she was preparing to back up in order to leave. However, Miller accidentally had the transmission in drive, causing her vehicle to drive forward onto the sidewalk and strike a light pole. Damage up to $2,500.
