Mangas Powers Wildcats Past Pilots
MISHAWAKA – The Indiana Wesleyan men’s basketball team entered play Saturday on a rare three-game losing streak.
Kyle Mangas made sure that the Wildcats were going to get back to their winning ways though.
Mangas, a former star at Warsaw, poured in 27 points to pace IWU past host Bethel College 91-70 in a Crossroads League contest.
IWU, ranked No. 4, led from start to finish to hand the No. 14 Pilots the league loss. The setback stopped Bethel’s homecourt winning streak at 26 in a row, which dated back to February of 2016.
Mangas, a freshman guard for the Wildcats, continued his stellar season with yet another superb all-around performance. The former Indiana All-Star went 10-14 from the field in his normal efficient manner, including 3-5 from 3-point land. Mangas also had six rebounds, four assists and two steals in the dominating win.
Mangas is now averaging a team-high 20.2 points-per-game for IWU. He is also leading his team in assists and 3-pointers, while averaging five rebounds per contest too.
IWU, which saw six players tally in double figures, led 40-27 at halftime and outscored the Pilots 51-43 in the final half.
The Wildcats hit on 32-59 shots overall, including going 11-24 from distance, as all five starters scored 10 or more points.
Bethel shot just 25-56 overall, including a season-low percentage from distance with a 6-20 showing. The Pilots were out rebounded for the first time this season with IWU owning a 41-28 edge on the glass.
Senior Tanner Shepherd, a Triton High School produce, had 19 points for the Pilots.
IWU has not lost four straight games since the 2005-06 season, which was the first for coach Greg Tonagel.
The Wildcats improve to 13-5 overall, while Bethel drops to 15-3. Both teams are now 4-2 in conference play.
IWU plays at Taylor and Bethel visits Spring Arbor in league action Tuesday night.
