Leesburg Students Conduct Bottle Flipping Research
LEESBURG — Leesburg Elementary students recently studied the mathematics behind bottle flipping. This activity was the result of a math project created during the summer while participating in a math-science partnership class.
The challenge allowed students to determine which brand of water bottle is the best to flip to land right-side up. To find this answer students engaged in math using a variety of standards. Students practiced using fractions, collecting and recording data and interpreting information collected to understand probability. Math process standards utilized in the exercise included reasoning abstractly, modeling with mathematics and attending to precision.
Students utilized these math skills to find the success rate of each bottle and each team verbally reported their findings to the rest of the class.
