Kingsmen Roll To Semistate Title
The defense for the Penn football team has been outstanding all season long.
That was the case once again Friday night.
Penn picked off four passes en route to a dominating 34-7 win over host Carmel in a Class 6-A semistate contest.
The win, Penn’s 12th in a row this season, sends the Kingsmen into the state championship game Nov. 25. Penn will play Ben Davis at 7 p.m. at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis. Ben Davis beat Avon 57-20 in the other Class 6-A semistate game Friday night.
Penn, which was meeting Carmel for the fifth straight year in the semistate, dominated. The Kingsmen led 14-0 at halftime after a scoreless first quarter. The Kingsmen added two more touchdowns in the third period to put the game away.
The Kingsmen, who have not lost since a defeat at Valparaiso in the season opener, got two interceptions from Drew Schneider. Caden Paquette had an interception return for a touchdown and Jackson Weston had a huge pick just before halftime to set up Penn’s second score of the contest.
Penn sophomore quarterback Ryan Lynch fired a pair of touchdown passes and also ran for a score in the win.
It was the 12th semistate championship for the Kingsmen, who lost to Carmel in the semistate a year ago. Penn won for the first time at Carmel since the 1996 season.
The Kingsmen have won five state championships with the last coming in 2000. Penn was state runner-up to Center Grove in 2015.
Carmel finishes its season at 8-5.
Mishawaka Marian dropped a 17-0 final to Brebeuf Jesuit in a Class 3-A semistate game at Marian Friday night.
The game was delayed two hours by lightning late in the second quarter with Brebeuf leading 10-0.
Marian finishes its season at 9-5, while Brebeuf improves to 10-4 and advances to the Class 3-A state title game.
Michigan City, which beat Concord 21-7 in a regional game last week, lost 21-14 to Kokomo Friday night in a Class 5-A semistate contest. The Wolves finish at 9-4.
