Boys Soccer Wrap: LCA, Vikings See Seasons End
At Argos
The Lakeland Christian Academy boys soccer team put up a valiant effort Wednesday night.
The Cougars played host Argos to a 4-4 stalemate through regulation and overtime play before losing in penalty kicks in a Class 1-A sectional contest.
LCA started off in control of the contest by taking a 3-0 lead. Sophomore Parker Stewart had a huge night for the Cougars as he put home all three goals in his first career hat trick.
Argos answered with a goal to cut the Cougar lead to 3-1 before senior Garrett McCoomb found the net to give LCA a 4-1 lead at intermission.
The Dragons responded in the final half with three goals to tie the match. The hosts scored on a penalty kick, its second of the final half, then added another goal to make it 4-3. Argos would score the tying goal with just 35 seconds left in regulation play.
The contest, after a pair of scoreless seven-minute overtime periods, went to penalty kicks. The Dragons won on a 4-1 edge in penalty kicks.
The trio of seniors McCoomb and Elijah Raymond and junior Theran McKeever each had an assist for LCA.
LCA junior goalie Remington Swanson had 10 saves in the contest.
LCA finishes its season at 6-11-0.
At Maconaquah
The Tippecanoe Valley boys soccer team saw its season end with a 2-1 loss to Columbia City in the Maconaquah Sectional.
The Eagles scored twice in the opening half to turn back the Vikings. Valley scored its lone goal in the season half as Fabia Mar converted on a penalty kick.
The Vikings finish their season at 1-16.
At Elkhart Memorial
The Goshen boys soccer team blanked Elkhart Memorial by a 4-0 count in the Class 3-A Memorial Sectional.
The No. 15 ranked RedHawks got goals from Gernando Quevado, Lucas Bontreger, Marcos Hernandez and Efren Ortega in the victory.
The duo of Junior Argueta and Alex Martinez each had an assist for Goshen.
It was a record-setting night for Goshen star Bontreger. The senior notched the 52nd goal of his outstanding prep career, breaking the old program record of 51 goals held by 2014 Goshen grad Isaac Huerta.
Goshen advances to play No. 9 Concord, which beat Elkhart Central 3-0 in the other semifinal match Wednesday night, in the sectional championship game on Saturday at 2 p.m. at Memorial.
Concord beat Goshen by a 3-1 final in the sectional title game a year ago.
Goshen sits at 14-3 on the season, while Concord is 13-1-4. The RedHawks handed Concord its lone loss of the regular season by edging the Minutemen 4-3 in a Northern Lakes Conference match. Concord played that game without keeper Josh Gorball, who was out due to a hand injury.
