NORTH WEBSTER — Studies have shown that young children who are read to frequently are better prepared to start school.
Instill the love of books and learning in your young children by bringing them to preschool story time at North Webster Community Public Library every Wednesday morning. The fall session starts Sept. 20 and runs through Nov. 8 with two time periods offered at 10:30 a.m. or 11:30 a.m. Geared to ages 3 to 6, the fall focus will be story book characters as the children have fun listening to stories, engaging in learning activities and making crafts.
Children aren’t the only ones who enjoy listening to stories. Suzie, a certified therapy dog, will be at the library 4 to 5 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 19, to listen to children read books to her. It’s a fun way for children to practice their oral reading skills and build confidence. Four 15-minute private reading sessions are available that day, and children must sign up in advance. To secure a reading appointment with Suzie, contact the youth services desk, call (574) 834-7122, ext. 202, or email [email protected].
Adults in Writer’s Corner will be reading their compositions about being a superhero 10 a.m. Monday, Sept. 18. Each month the group is asked to write about a different topic and share what they have written. You don’t have to be an accomplished writer to participate, just someone who enjoys writing. Writer’s corner meets the third Monday every month. Newbies are welcome.
Later that day, R.E.A.D. Book Club meets at 5:30 p.m. to discuss “The Tenderness of Wolves” by Stef Penney. October’s book selection will be “No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency,” the first in a series of novels by Alexander McCall Smith. It’s a charming adventure novel about a lady detective who navigates through her cases and personal life with wisdom, good humor and an occasional cup of tea. Stop by the library and pick up a copy, then join the discussion Oct. 16.
Registrations are currently being accepted for a four-class beginning genealogy course that will be held every Thursday in October at 10:30 a.m. Taught by Local History and Genealogy Center Director Beth Smith, students will learn how to get started researching their family genealogy including standards for genealogy, where to find information, genealogy websites and resources, research techniques, terms and definitions, and much more. Although the course is free, advance registration is required to attend. Those interested can sign up at the circulation desk or call (574) 834-7122.
Gear up for fall reading and enter the September reading contest. Read a book with the word “fall” in the title. When you have completed the book, enter the title, your name and phone number in the drawing for a chance to win a prize. The more fall books you read and enter, the more chances you have to win. The drawing will take place the first week in October.
