Inmate Assaults Jail Officer In Plymouth
PLYMOUTH — A jailer at the Marshall County Jail was injured after being assaulted by an inmate at that facility Wednesday evening, Sept. 13. The jailer was taken to the Plymouth Hospital for treatment and released a short time later.
Zachary D. Cowger, 22, Plymouth, is facing charges of battery against a public safety official engaged in duty.
According to the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department, officers with the sheriff’s department and Plymouth Police Department were called to the county jail. The initial report was a jail officer had been injured during a fight inside the facility. When officers arrived they found the jail officers on duty had successfully locked down all of the inmates in the cell block where the fight had occurred.
During the investigation it was learned Cowger had battered the officer during a confrontation in one of the cell blocks. The investigation is ongoing and a case report will be filed for additional charges through the Marshall County Prosecutor’s office.
Cowger is currently awaiting trial for several felony charges, included an alleged battery on a police officer when he was initially arrested in August.
Marshall County Sheriff’s Department was assisted by Plymouth EMS and Plymouth Police Department.
