Upcoming Events At The Milford Public Library
The following events are upcoming at the Milford Public Library.
Summer Reading Club Community Project
Police Officer Travis Marsh, Firefighter Brian Haines and EMTs Mike Irons and Daren Miller stopped by the library on Aug. 25, to accept the Summer Reading Clubs’ winning project. The children voted all summer on three community projects, the winner of which was making stuffed animals for various community service organizations. One hundred kits were purchased with donated funds and will be divided between Milford’s Police Department, Milford’s Fire Department and the EMTs. Thank you to all the local individuals, businesses and organizations who supported the Summer Reading Club this year.

The American Library Association reports that Americans spend $36.96 a year for the public library – the average cost of one hardcover book.

To get a library card, you must bring one form of identification and proof of residency. Anyone age six and older can get a library card, though parents or guardians need to sign for children.
For non-residents, the cost of a Milford Public Library card is $56. The library encourages potential patrons to look around at neighboring libraries to find the one that best suits their needs.
Since Milford Public Library is a member of lending consortium Evergreen Indiana, patrons can also borrow materials at Syracuse Public Library and North Webster Community Public Library. Individuals can also place holds on items at over 100 Evergreen Indiana institutions.
Solar Eclipse
The Milford Public Library had planned for the Aug. 21, solar eclipse for months. The safety glasses were ordered and a program planned. The media coverage and general interest in the solar eclipse grew and so did the demand for safety glasses. Since this was the first total eclipse visible to the continental United States in almost forty years, many people wanted to safely view it.
The library was unaware of the solar eclipse when planning for the 2017 budget year, so the library didn’t have the funds for purchasing safety glasses. The Friends of the Milford Public Library very generously purchased the safety glasses for the library. Milford School was given 400 pair, and the library had 200 to give out to patrons.
Julie Frew, Director of the Milford Public Library, said, “We could have easily given away 1000 pairs of eclipse glasses! The Library was inundated with phone calls and people from all over dropping in to see if we had glasses left.”
A big thank you to the Friends group for providing the glasses! The next total solar eclipse visible over the continental United States will be April 8, 2024, and the Milford Public Library plans to be ready for it!
