Gunter, Foster Named County Republican Woman And Man of The Year
SYRACUSE — Steve Foster and Avis Gunter were honored as the 2017 Kosciusko County Republican Man and Woman of the Year. The annual hall of fame dinner announcing the recipients was held Thursday evening, Aug. 31, aboard the SS Lilly Pad for a two-hour cruise around Lake Wawasee.
Jean Northener was honored to announce this year’s Woman of the Year. But before she made the announcement, she stated this couldn’t be done without thinking about Katheryn Teel, Ruth Hoppus, Pauline Jordan and Ed Pratt, who she said laid the foundation for “what has made us what we are.” Jokingly she added, “They would come back from the grave if we didn’t do it right. They were adamant how things were to be done.”
During the introduction, Northener stated the recipient was someone she has known for a long time and was in the courthouse at one point. “She probably would still be there if she wanted to be … she’s done everything there is to do for this party. She was a worker in the courthouse, she was an elected official …. .” “I don’t know of anyone over the years, and I’ve known them all, who has gotten to be woman of the year … anyone more deserving than our own Avis Gunter.”
Gunter was at a loss of words by the honor and all she could say was “Thank you so much.” It was noted those who knew her found it unbelievable she had nothing to say.
The Man of the Year was introduced by Mike Ragan, county party chairman. He stated the recipient was “someone who has become a very good friend of mine, who has helped with everything I have asked.” Ragan noted the recipient has driven hundreds of miles for the headquarters to get items. “It is an honor and a pleasure to announce Steve Foster.”
Foster, who is former treasurer for the county party, had only a few words to say upon receiving the honor. “Thank you … I’ve enjoyed the company of most everyone here … lot of time campaigning … .”
Ragan had commented prior to the announcements it is difficult to pick the man and woman of the year recipients. “There are so many people who help us, that go the extra mile. I’m so grateful for all of you. This year’s selection is just as difficult as any other year … .”
The evening also included introduction of various city, county and state elected officials or his/her representatives. Andrew Tatami, a candidate for U.S. Senate, was also introduced and given an opportunity to briefly speak to those present.
