Teams Shuffle With Latest Baseball, Softball Sectional Alignments
INDIANAPOLIS – The IHSAA announced Tuesday morning its new alignments for baseball and softball sectionals for the next two years, 2017-18 and 2018-19.
The area team most affected by the alignment is Triton. The Class 1-A school will see a new set of teams in both sports. The Trojans will move out of the Fort Wayne Blackhawk-based sectional and head west to meet up in Sectional 51 with Argos, Culver, LaCrosse, Oregon-Davis, South Bend Career Academy and South Central (Union Mills). The move could help the Trojans, which saw Blackhawk win the past four sectional titles.
In softball, the four-team alignment is gone and Triton moves to a six-team format. Triton will join Argos, Culver, LaCrosse, South Central (Union Mills) and West Central. The pairing of South Central and Triton joins the tournament rivals, which saw each other in the regional in both 2014 and 2015. South Central has won five sectionals in the past seven years, Triton four in that span.
Class 3-A is going to see some area changes, baseball’s Sectional 21 having Angola added to make a seven-team field with NorthWood, Wawasee, Tippecanoe Valley, Fairfield, Lakeland and West Noble to form the old alignment from the mid-2000s. Softball’s Sectional 21 will lose NorthWood, making that sectional a five-team group of Wawasee, Tippecanoe Valley, Fairfield, Lakeland and West Noble. The Panthers will travel to Sectional 18, making a five-team group with Culver Academy, Jimtown, Knox and John Glenn. The northwestern pairings had to make some adjustments with Kankakee Valley moving to Class 4-A after making the 3-A state finals two years in a row.
Class 4-A won’t see any movement in Sectional 4, where the baseball and softball grids will stay the same. Baseball will have Warsaw, Goshen, Northridge, Elkhart Central, Elkhart Memorial, Concord and Penn while softball will have the same minus Penn, which stays in Sectional 3.
Class 2-A will have Sectional 37 stay the same in baseball, Whitko paired with Cass, Manchester, Oak Hill, Rochester and Wabash. In softball, Sectional 37 will see some changes with Manchester, Oak Hill, Wabash and Whitko remaining, but seeing Cass and Rochester added and North Miami, Northfield and Southwood dropping down to Class 1-A.
