Theila Banta Elected To Winona Lake Town Council
WINONA LAKE — During a caucus held Tuesday, Aug. 8, Theila “Tecy” Banta, was elected as a District 1 council member for the Winona Lake Town Council.
The spot was vacated by former council member Peter Christos. Christos officially resigned from his position on the Winona Lake Town Council with a letter of resignation dated July 10, one day prior to being convicted of two misdemeanors. Christos was in attendance for the caucus.
During the caucus, James Zachary, Kearstin Criswell and Theila Banta were all given three minutes to address the precinct committeeman and the audience. The precinct members stressed that all three candidates were wonderful choices and that voting was difficult.
In the end, Banta was elected to fill the vacancy after the very first round of voting. She stressed her long history in the community as well as her desire to serve during her opportunity to speak. Banta spent six years teaching at Lakeland Christian Academy before retiring. She now works at Baker Youth Club.
“You’ve created a wholesome place for people,” she commented. “That should continue.”
Banta joked that the only thing she would change about Winona Lake would be to have the deer find another meeting spot besides her front lawn.
After being elected, Banta briefly addressed those present. “I appreciate your confidence and I am here to serve,” she said.
