Warsaw Students Win Two Awards At National Contest For National History Day
WARSAW — The Indiana Historical Society proudly announces four students from Warsaw Community Schools won two awards at the National Contest for National History Day, which took place June 11 through 15 at the University of Maryland’s campus in College Park, Maryland.
Keller Bailey, Jason Benyousky, Geoffrey Hochstetler and Ryun Hoffert won an Outstanding State Entry award. Their project, “The Many Stands of Pearl Harbor,” was entered in the Junior Group Performance category.
The Warsaw Community Schools students also received the Captain Ken Coskey Naval History Award, a special award given to history projects that best capture an appreciation for naval history. The $1,000 prize is named for the late Captain Ken Coskey, a Vietnam War combat aviator and Prisoner of War, and former executive director of the Naval Historical Foundation.
The Indiana delegation of 60 students competed against 3,000 other students from across the country and from international schools around the world. The National Contest is the final stage in a series of contests for NHD participants. Students in grades four through 12 begin their journey by exploring a historical subject and then using their research to create a documentary, exhibit, paper, performance or website. One key to their success is the incorporation of a theme. The 2017 theme is “Taking a Stand in History.”
