Track Star Murphy Honored For Academics
ELMHURST, Ill. – IUPUI senior Robert Murphy added another notch to his already illustrious belt on Thursday as he was voted Academic All-Summit League for the outdoor track season.
Murphy was the lone IUPUI honoree and maintains a 3.71 grade point average, having graduated with his degree in Media Arts & Science.
The former Warsaw track and cross country standout is currently enjoying an historic run with the Jaguars, having recently earned the program’s first-ever trip to the NCAA National Championships. Murphy posted a personal record time of 8:44.91 in the 3,000m steeplechase in Lexington, Ky., last week, placing third in his heat to earn an automatic trip to Eugene. He owns four IUPUI outdoor records, having posted the fastest 800m, 1,500m, 5,000m and 3,000m steeplechase marks.
Murphy collected back-to-back Summit League steeplechase championships and won the 1,500 at the league championships last season. He was also recently named a national finalist for the D1 Men’s HERO of the Year Award by HERO Sports.
The latest honor caps a trio of academic all-league honors for Murphy, who had already collected plaudits during cross country and indoor track seasons this year.
To be eligible for The Summit League Academic All-League team, a student-athlete must have a cumulative grade-point average (GPA) of at least 3.30 (on a 4.0 scale), completed at least one full academic year at the current institution and participated in 50 percent of their team’s competitions. The Men’s and Women’s Outdoor Track and Field All-League teams are made up of the 10 student-athletes receiving the most votes with all ties standing.
