Elkhart Baseball Sectional: Kingsmen Cruise To Title
ELKHART – It was a milestone moment for the Penn baseball program Monday.
The Kingsmen presented coach Greg Dikos with his 700th win in big time fashion.
Penn rolled past Elkhart Central 16-3 in six innings to claim the Class 4-A Elkhart Memorial Sectional championship.
The Kingsmen, who have won four straight sectional titles and 17 in the last 20 years, advance to the LaPorte Regional on Saturday. They will be joined by sectional winners from Plymouth, Munster and Chesterton for the tourney.
Penn actually trailed Central 2-1 early on Monday and the game was tied at 3-3 after three innings. The No. 17 Kingsmen then exploded for 13 runs over the final three frames, including plating nine runs in the sixth inning to end the contest.
Trevor Waite homered and scored five times to pace the champions. Ryan Lynch notched the pitching win to improve to 6-0 on the season.
Central defeated Warsaw 4-3 in 10 innings and then topped host Memorial 2-1 in a semifinal on Saturday. Penn topped Goshen 10-6 in the other semifinal Saturday.
Dikos, a Hall of Famer, has guided the Kingsmen to four state championships in his illustrious coaching career.
Penn improves to 24-6, while Central closes its season at 17-12.
