Postseason Pairings Set For Prep Baseball Tourney
INDIANAPOLIS – The Warsaw and Wawasee baseball teams both should have pretty good scouting reports on their first-round foes come sectional time.
The Tigers and the Warriors now know who will be that opponent after the IHSAA conducted pairings Friday night for the 51st annual state tournament series.
Sectional action across the state for 384 teams entered in the four-class postseason is set for May 24-29. Regionals, each featuring four teams, will be June 3, with two-team semistates June 10 and the four state championship games June 16-17.
Warsaw will face Elkhart Central in a first-round matchup in the seven team field of the Class 4-A Elkhart Memorial Sectional. The Tigers, who are currently 5-12, are scheduled to host the Blue Blazers in the regular-season finale on May 22.
Penn is the defending champion at Memorial and the Kingsmen have won three straight sectional titles. Penn went 29-4 a year ago and also won the regional. The Kingsmen are 14-4 this Spring.
Wawasee drew host and four-time defending sectional champion NorthWood in the Class 3-A sectional in Nappanee. The Warriors sit at 8-8, while the Panthers are 15-1. NorthWood beat Wawasee 7-2 in Nappanee on April 21. The pair of Northern Lakes Conference foes are slated to meet again May 8 in Syracuse.
Tippecanoe Valley will face West Noble in the opening game of the NorthWood Sectional. The Vikings sit at 6-7.
Whitko, ranked No. 6 in Class 2-A, will face Rochester in a semifinal game of the Wabash Sectional. The Wildcats sit at 14-3 on the season.
Triton will play Hamilton in a first-round game of the Class 1-A Fort Wayne Blackhawk Sectional. The Trojans are 10-3 after having their eight-game winning streak snapped by Winamac Friday night. Host Blackhawk, which is ranked No. 7, has won three straight sectional championships.
Triton is the local team that boasts the most recent sectional hardware. The Trojans claimed a sectional title in 2015. Valley last won a sectional crown in 2012, Warsaw in 2010 and Wawasee in 1997. Whitko is still seeking its first-ever sectional title.
The regional sites for area sectional winners are LaPorte (4-A), Bellmont (3-A), Wabash (2-A) and Caston (1-A). The Elkhart Memorial Sectional winner plays the Munster Sectional winner, while the NorthWood Sectional champion faces the New Haven Sectional champion. The Wabash Sectional champion takes on the Lapel Sectional winner and the Fort Wayne Blackhawk Sectional winner faces the LaVille Sectional champion.
The semistate hosts for the Northern part of the state are Plymouth and Kokomo. The semistate assignments will be made by the IHSAA on June 4.
