WARSAW — Warsaw Community Schools is proud to announce the selection of Ben Barkey as the newest principal of Madison Elementary. Barkey follows the steps of Tom Kline, who will retire following 5-years of service at the conclusion of the 2016-2017 school year.
Barkey graduated from Manchester College with a bachelor’s degree in biology and an education endorsement. He continued his education at Ball State University where he earned his Master of Arts in Education degree in the field of educational administration and supervision. In addition to his degrees, Barkey has obtained an Indiana Administrative License in administration and supervision, K-12, as well as a teaching certificate for both biology and mathematics.
His experience at Warsaw Schools began in 2002, when he accepted a position at Edgewood Middle School teaching science, science plus and pre-algebra. In 2012, Barkey was selected to serve as the STEM instructional coach at Washington STEM Academy, where he acted as lead facilitator in transforming Washington into an Indiana Certified STEM School. Most recently, Barkey took on the position of assistant principal for the class of 2017 at Warsaw Community High School.
Complimenting his experience in the classroom, Barkey has been the recipient of numerous educational awards and grants, including the Charlotte M. Boener Award for Innovative Science Teaching (Middle School Science Teacher of the Year for Indiana) as well as the Bio-Crossroads Teacher of Champions award.
In addition to his work with students in the classroom, Barkey also helped shape student lives on the golf course. Serving as the Warsaw men’s golf coach from 2002 to 2016, Barkey led his team to eight conference titles, eight sectional titles and four regional titles. He was awarded the NLC Coach of the Year award seven times and Regional Coach of the Year award four times.
“I am incredibly thrilled to be joining the Madison family and I am looking forward to working with the students and staff next school year,” stated Barkey. “Madison has a tradition of excellence and I am honored to become their next instructional leader. As I prepare to depart from my current position, I cannot express enough gratitude and praise towards the faculty and students at WCHS.
“We are very excited to have Mr. Barkey become the next principal at Madison Elementary School,” stated Dr. David Hoffert, superintendent of Warsaw Community Schools. “Mr. Barkey is a WCHS graduate and has spent his entire career as an educator inside of the Warsaw system. He has been known as one of the foremost experts in STEM education and we are very thrilled to have his leadership working with our Madison staff, students and community.”
