Cubs Baseball: Cubs Turn Power On In Win
SOUTH BEND – The South Bend Cubs beat the Great Lakes Loons 9-6 with an impressive showing of high power offense on Tuesday night.
The Cubs got on the scoreboard early with another first inning home run off the bat of Yeiler Peguero to give the Cubs a 2-0 lead. Wladimir Galindo then hit South Bend’s second 2-run homer of the inning after Isaac Paredes reached first base safely on a botched routine ground ball by Loons third baseman Oneil Cruz.
Great Lakes wasted no time in cutting into the Cubs 4-0 lead, scoring their first run in the second inning on Cody Thomas’ solo shot to right-centerfield.
Like the night before, the Loons also took advantage of South Bend’s error-prone defense to score two more times on their second inside-the-park home run in as many games.
The Cubs added their fifth run of the night off a hard hit single by Zack Short that escaped the glove of the diving Loons shortstop to score D.J. Wilson from second base.
Yeiler Peguero continued his hot hitting streak with a RBI-double in the seventh inning for his third RBI of the night. After the double, the Cubs offense scored 3 more runs in the inning to increase their lead to 9-3 over the Loons.
With three outs remaining, Great Lakes staged a minor comeback to pull within three runs of the Cubs. After scoring three runs to make it a 9-6 ballgame, the tying run came to the plate in the ninth due to a series of walks and base hits, but with runners at first and third with two outs the Loons could not take the lead as Cubs reliever John Michael Knighton struck out their final hitter of the night.
Starter Duncan Robinson earned the win for the Cubs pitching 5 1/3 innings only giving up one earned run before handing the ball over to the bullpen with one out in the fifth inning.
Dylan Cease is scheduled to start tomorrow night’s game against the Loons at Four Winds Field. Cease, the Chicago Cubs top-pitching prospect is 0-1 with a 1.00 ERA in two starts this season. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. ET and will be broadcast on WMYS, My Michiana.
