Triton Sports Wrap – April 7
Baseball
Triton did manage to get its baseball season started Friday with South Bend Riley, and the Trojans made the most of all the waiting.
After a week full of games being postponed, the Trojans visited South Bend Riley and came away with a 16-2 win in five innings.
Triton scored two runs out of the gate in the first, then put in the big blow in the third with a nine-spot. In all, the Trojans scored all 16 of its runs before the Wildcats came up with its only two in the bottom of the fifth.
Triton collected 11 hits in the game and drew seven walks. Lucas Newman led the way for the winners with three hits, three runs scored and two RBI. Max Slusser had three RBI without the benefit of a hit and scored a pair of runs.
Zac Pitney, Keygan Mosier, Nate Flenar and Ryan Kaufman all scored two runs each. Dylan Hensley added two hits.
Pitney was effective, throwing four innings of shutout ball, walking none and striking out five. Hensley worked the final inning, both Riley runs scored unearned. Zack Meert had two hits and scored a run for the Wildcats.
Triton (1-0) will visit LaVille on Monday.
Softball
Triton’s softball opener didn’t go nearly as well, losing 13-3 Friday afternoon at Rochester.
Rochester pitcher Brianna Lee held Triton to three hits in the complete game, seven strikeout performance. Lee also added four hits and four RBIs to pace the Zebra offense.
Taytum Hargrave had a hit and a run and Nicole Sechrist walked twice and stole two bases for the Trojans.
Triton (0-1) will take on Argos in a doubleheader Saturday.
