Syracuse Woman Arrested For Driving Drunk, Head Butting Officer
SYRACUSE — A Syracuse woman was being transported after driving drunk when she crawled through the police vehicle’s window cage and headbutted the officer.
Kayla Lynn Brown, 25, 4444 E. CR 1300N, Syracuse, is being charged with battery causing bodily injury to law enforcement officers, a level 5 felony, and operating while intoxicated, a class C misdemeanor.
On Feb. 12, an officer was sitting at the four-way stop in front of Wawasee High School in Syracuse. The officer observed a vehicle traveling southbound with a broken tail light that was weaving across the centerline. A traffic stop was conducted and the driver was identified as Brown.
According to the affidavit of probable cause filed on March 21, the officer observed that Brown had glossy eyes, her speech was slurred and she had slow reactions. Brown admitted to drinking one alcoholic beverage and failed a field sobriety test. At this point, she agreed to take a breathalyzer and was transported to the Syracuse Police Department.
While at the department, Brown became very uncooperative and confrontational and then refused the breathalyzer test. The officer obtained a search warrant for Brown’s blood and placed her in the patrol vehicle for transportation to Kosciusko Community Hospital.
While in the patrol vehicle, Brown was able to crawl through the window cage and into the front seat of the vehicle. When the officer attempted to remove her, Brown head butted him on the right side of the face. Officers were then able to successfully remove her from the vehicle and transport her to the hospital for a blood test.
The blood test showed that Brown’s BAC level was .19 percent.
Brown is scheduled for an initial hearing in Kosciouscko County Court on April 13.
