Area Trio Highlight Basketball Academic All-State
INDIANAPOLIS – Seventy-nine Indiana high school seniors – 40 boys and 39 girls – have been chosen as First-Team Academic All-State by the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association.
In addition, 154 more boys and 161 more girls were recognized as honorable mention Academic All-State for 2017.
Performance in the classroom as well as on the court were factors in choosing the respective lists, which weigh measures such as grade-point average, class rank and simple basketball stats. The IBCA has selected an Academic All-State team for boys since 1973. The program was expanded to include a girls Academic All-State team in 1980.
Among the selections on a local level include the Warsaw duo of Kyle Mangas and Dayton Groninger as well as Tippecanoe Valley’s Anne Secrest, all named to the First Team.
Honorable Mention Academic All-State from the direct area include Tim Conley and Hannah Haines of Wawasee, Zac Pitney of Triton, Meredith Brouyette of Tippecanoe Valley, Page Desenberg of Warsaw, and Nicole Flickinger and Erin Graber of NorthWood.
Other area First Team Academic All-State boys include Jack DeGroot of Winamac, Nick Felke of Plymouth, Cody Holmes of Northfield, Joe Smith of Elkhart Memorial and Mitchell Walters of Goshen. Area First Team Academic All-State girls include Courtney Dunlap of Argos, Lindsay Kline of Penn, Marci Miller of Northridge, Kyannah Stull of John Glenn and Tori Styers of Culver Academy.
Area Honorable Mention Academic All-State boys include Brian Doslak, Stuart Feeley and Matt McCown of Penn; Billy Harness and Matt Strong of John Glenn; Kyrun Foster of East Noble, Will Jeffers of South Bend Adams, Conner Lundquist of Central Noble, Jakob Maxwell of Elkhart Christian, David McAtee of Manchester and Sam Pawlak of Jimtown.
Area Honorable Mention Academic All-State girls include Tessa Clark, Megan Duckworth, Abby Hochstetler and Hannah Yeakey of Bethany Christian; Morgan Bales and Darian Farber of Columbia City; Melinda Bontrager and Juliane Miller of Northridge; Killian Mountford and Daly Sullivan of South Bend St. Joseph’s; Andrea Garcia and Maggie Whitinger of Bremen; Courtney Freeman and Katie Vice of Central Noble, Kelly Freehauf of John Glenn, Mary Henderson of Mishawaka Marian, Havanna Kleeberg of Prairie Heights, Jacklyn Peas of Northfield, Abigail Peterson of East Noble, Mallory Vernon of LaVille and Jordan Ware of Elkhart Central.
