Postseason Paths Drawn Up For Hoosier Hysteria
The map to a sectional championship is now known for boys basketball teams across the Hoosier State.
The path to tournament glory was unveiled Sunday night as the IHSAA held its “blind” draw for the 107th annual state tournament series.
The latest edition of Hoosier Hysteria begins in earnest around the state with first-round sectional action on Feb. 28. Sectional championship games are set for March 4 with regionals March 11, followed by semi states March 18 and the four state title games on March 25 at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.
Warsaw will begin defense of its sectional title at venerable North Side Gym on March 1. The Tigers, who won both sectional and regional titles a year ago, face NLC foe Northridge in a first-round game of the Class 4-A Elkhart Central Sectional.
Warsaw, which has lost its last two games to fall to 14-8, beat the Raiders 68-46 back on Jan. 6. The Tigers, who won the NLC title for the third straight year at 7-0, also own regular-season wins over possible sectional foes Concord, Goshen and Elkhart Memorial.
Warsaw, with a win over the Raiders, would face either Elkhart Central or Penn in a semifinal game. Central, which is 18-2, beat Warsaw 50-45 at North Side Gym on Jan. 28. Warsaw has not played Penn this season.
Central, under first-year coach Terry Smith, has won 10 in a row. The Blue Blazers, who have lost to Glenn and South Bend Riley this season, are 7-0 versus the sectional field.
No. 4 NorthWood looks for its fourth straight sectional crown as the favorite at Wawasee. The Panthers, who are 18-2, face Lakeland in a first-round game of the Class 3-A event in Syracuse. NorthWood beat Lakeland 60-49 on Jan. 21.
Host Wawasee opens sectional play on Feb. 28 in the first game versus Tippecanoe Valley. The Warriors play at Valley this coming Friday in the regular-season finale. Wawasee has dropped seven straight and 14 of its last 15 games. Valley, which was sectional runner-up last year, is 3-8 in its last 11 games.
Whitko will compete in the seven-team Class 2-A Westview Sectional field. The Wildcats, who are 13-8 under first-year coach Eli Henson, face Central Noble in a first-round game. Whitko beat Central Noble 73-67 way back on Dec. 3. Host Westview is the defending champion and will face Fremont in a first round game.
Triton got a very favorable draw as host of its own Class 1-A sectional. The Trojans, who have won seven in a row to improve to 15-5, received a bye. Triton, the defending sectional champions, will play either Culver or North Miami in the semifinals. The Trojans beat Culver 60-44 back on Jan. 13. No. 8 Oregon-Davis, sporting a 17-5 mark, plays South Central at Triton.
Lakeland Christian Academy received a bye in the six-team Class 1-A Bethany Christian Sectional. The Cougars, who are 1-7 in their last eight games, will face either No. 9 Fort Wayne Blackhawk Christian or Elkhart Christian Academy in a semifinal matchup. ECA beat LCA 65-40 on Jan. 6. Blackhawk has won three straight sectional crowns.
The regional matchups on March 11 will be played at Michigan City (4-A), Marion (3-A), North Judson (2-A) and Triton (1-A).
The Elkhart Sectional winner will face the East Chicago Central Sectional winner in the second semifinal game at Michigan City. The Wawasee Sectional champion meets the Bellmont Sectional winner in the first game at Marion. The Westview Sectional champion plays the Gary Roosevelt Sectional winner in the second game at North Judson. The Triton Sectional champion faces the Bethany Christian Sectional winner in the second game at Triton.
The North Semistates will be held March 18 at Huntington North and Lafayette Jefferson. The pairings for the semistates will be made by the IHSAA on Sunday, March 12.
