Area Teens Compete For Scholarships, Opportunity To Perform With Symphony
WARSAW — Four area teens gathered at the Warsaw Performing Arts Center on Sunday, Feb. 12 for the 3rd Annual Young Artist Competition hosted by the Wagon Wheel Center for the Arts and Symphony of the Lakes. Each teen was given the opportunity to perform a musical piece in front of judges to win scholarships and the opportunity to perform with the Symphony of the Lakes.
The talented teens included:
Allyn Beifus – Beifus is the daughter of Dee Hoffman and Brian Beifus. She is currently enrolled as junior at Homestead High School in Fort Wayne. She performed two different pieces for the judges. She performed the Third Movement from Piano Concerto #3 by Kabalevsky on the piano and performed Sonata for Marimba and Piano composed by Peter Tanner on the marimba.
Joshua Catanzaro – Catanzaro is the son of John and Kari Catanzaro. He is currently a junior at Maconaquah High School in Peru. He played Rhapsody in Blue by George Gershwin on the piano.
Anna Stout – Stout is the daughter of Michael and Laura Stout. She is currently a homeschooled sophomore from Warsaw. Stout played the Third Movement from Violin Concerto in C Major by Kabalevsky on the violin.
Michelle Tapp – Tapp is the daughter of Ling and Steve Tapp. She is a senior at Penn High School in Mishawaka. Tapp played the First Movement from Piano Concerto in A Minor by Schumann on the piano.
After the performances, a short reception was held as three judges chose the winners.
Allyn Beifus won the bronze award. She was given a $150 scholarship. Anna Stout won the silver award. She was given a $250 scholarship. And the gold award was won by Michelle Tapp. She was given a $500 scholarship and will perform with the Symphony of the Lakes in the April 29 concert, Once Upon a Symphony, at the Winona Heritage Room.
