Local Organization Committed To Helping Kosciusko Seniors
WARSAW — Homebound Kosciusko County residents age 60 or above may be eligible to have meals delivered to them through the Mobile Meals Program offered by Kosciusko Community Senior Services.
KCSS provides over 35,000 mobile meals each year. They also offer emergency frozen meals for clients when weather does not allow for daily delivery. The cost is $3 to $5 per meal, based on income criteria. They can also prepare special meals for people with specific dietary needs or food allergies.
Mobile Meals Director, Jamie Krygowski, states that the meal delivery also serves as a wellness check of sorts for the client, as the volunteer delivering the meal will alert someone at the senior center if the client does not answer their door for their scheduled delivery. The senior center can then get in touch with that client’s emergency contact or the police department if necessary.
David Neff, executive director of KCSS, states, “Sometimes the Mobile Meals volunteer is the only person that senior will have contact with that day.”
Krygowski reports that all volunteer drivers must undergo a background check for safety precautions.
According to Neff, “It’s helping to keep people in their homes for as long as possible. Otherwise they could potentially have to go to assisted living. Seniors want to stay in their own home as long as possible.”
Anyone interested in receiving meals through the Mobile Meal Program may contact Jamie Krygowski at (574) 267-2012.
Neff states, “We are now at a place where we can grow this program to benefit more citizens of Kosciusko County. I know there are more people out there who need our services, but they just don’t know about us.”
For those who don’t know about them, Kosciusko Community Senior Services is located inside the Pete Thorn Center at 800 North Park Avenue in Warsaw. Besides the Mobile Meals Program, they also have available handicapped accessible van transportation for seniors and a senior activity center.
Van transportation is available Monday through Friday. All vans have wheelchair lifts.
Activities offered at the senior center include bingo, euchre, movies, birthday celebrations, crafts, chair aerobics and many other activities.
