Local Business Group Looks To Assist Area Charity
WARSAW — Indiana Business Opportunity Partnership will hold its sixth annual Winter Wonderland Bazaar and Quarter Auction Nov. 12 at the Baker Youth Club, located on Smith Street, to benefit Heartline Pregnancy Center. iBOP is a group of direct sales people and local crafters who meet the first Sunday of each month to network and train.
IBOP organizes a number of events and recently became a 501(c)3.
All the money iBOP raises in its events goes to the charity. In the past iBOP has raised and donated funds to Beaman Home, Joe’s Kids and Fellowship Missions.
“For us it’s about networking and getting our name out there, but we love to do events for charity and help get their name out there,” said Betty Swanson, iBOP president. Other organizations iBOP has supported are Habitat for Humanity and Big Brothers Big Sisters.
“The quarter auction portion is typically 2 1/2 to 3 hours with intermission,” Swanson said.
For the Winter Wonderland Bazaar, each member of iBOP donates items to the events. Heartline Pregnancy Center will also get some donations for the event. For the bazaar portion of the event, crafters and vendors can still sign up to participate as a few spaces may be available. “I want more crafters at the event,” Swanson explained. “Anyone who does homemade, I’d like that. I’d like to have a better balance (with direct sales).”
iBOP chose Heartline Pregnancy Center this year to help showcase the work it does in the community. Heartline has been in Kosciusko County since 1985 and provides medical and educational services to its clients.
Shelbi Gillette, client services director for Heartline, explained on the medical side of the agency, clients can receive a free pregnancy test. Heartline also offers limited ultrasound as it tries to fill the gap of the first 12 weeks before a client goes to see a doctor. Should a client discover she’s pregnant, Heartline can refer her to a doctor if she doesn’t have one.
Through a grant, Heartline also offers vouchers for STD testing. Gillette said those are limited to four or five a month due to the grant limits.
On the education side, Heartline offers Earn While Your Learn, prenatal and parenting classes for up to age 5. There are also classes for mom on how to eat and exercise during her pregnancy.
Heartline also has a B.A.B.E. store where clients can earn coupons to use on supplies such as diapers and wipes all the way up to car seats and cribs. Gillette explained transportation is often an issue for clients, so Heartline created a mobile unit that provides pregnancy tests, an ultrasound, a bathroom and a conference area. Heartline tries to be at specific locations at specific days and times.
“One of the things we discussed with Shelbi is people come in scared. They may be thinking about abortion or adoptions. That’s one of the things Shelbi explained about how Heartline educates clients. It’s not a clinical place. If it was me, I’d be more comfortable talking about things here than a doctor’s office,” Swanson said.
Gillette explained Heartline offers options for counseling and discusses the physical and emotional consequences of parenting, adoption and abortion. The agency does not refer clients to abortion doctors. “We want to educate the public about what Heartline does and doesn’t do,” Gillette said.
The Winter Wonderland Bazaar will open 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Nov. 12. Doors open for the quarter auction at noon and the auction starts at 1 p.m. Tickets are limited and can be purchased by calling Swanson at (574) 527-6005 or by sending a Facebook message to www.facebook.com/iBOPfans.
