Skellville Is Benton Harbor’s Premier Halloween Scare Stop
BENTON HARBOR, MICH. — If you’ve ever driven down M-139 in Benton Harbor, you’ve probably spotted Skellville. Antique cars and tractors are paired with skeletons in a one-of-a-kind attraction.
Some people march to the beat of a drum, but Brad Piedt marches to a different instrument.
He’s a retailer, collector and show man. He’s is also a third generation owner of his family’s Benton Harbor business, John Piedt & Sons.
“It’s on the tour of roads to America of places to visit that are odd. When people drive by, I don’t want them to think this a normal place,” Brad admits. “So I do get a lot of tourism and a lot of visitors, which is great. The more the merrier.
“The old store was built in the 20’s, and so we kind of decorated that up like it was when my grandfather had it. We got Al Capone and Humphrey Bogart and some of the other famous people.
“It’s evolved into now concrete statuary making. That’s what I do pretty much every day now.
“One of our big sellers is the skulls. So we make several different sizes. From very small golf ball size ones to two-and-a-half-foot, 300-pound ones.
“We also have a little tour that we do year round. It’s out back; it’s called Skellville. And it’s a place where we have antique cars and antique tractors, and old buildings, skeletons. Everybody is pretty much a skeleton back there.”
If you can’t make it to Skellville for Halloween, don’t worry. You can check out this attraction all year round. Learn more atskellville.net
