HS Football: Pairings Set For Sectionals
A pair of rematches from the regular season and a familiar first-round foe.
Those are the storylines for local high school football teams for first-round sectional games.
The IHSAA conducted pairings for the 44th annual state tournament series Sunday night in Indianapolis.
First-round sectional games statewide in Class 1-A through Class 5-A are set for Friday, Oct. 21. First-round matchups in Class 6-A will be played on Friday, Oct. 28. Sectional championship games in all six classes are slated for Friday, Nov. 4. Regional games will be played on Nov. 11 with semi states Nov. 18 and the six state championship games on Nov. 25-26 at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.
Wawasee and Triton should not have to venture far to find scouting reports for their openers.
The Warriors will travel to Middlebury to face Northridge in a first round game in Sectional 19 in Class 4-A. The Warriors edged the Raiders 21-20 in two overtimes in a Northern Lakes Conference game in Syracuse back on Sept. 2. Wawasee has lost four straight NLC games since then to drop to 3-4. The Raiders sit at 1-6.
The winner of the Wawasee-Northridge game plays the winner of No. 2 NorthWood (7-0) versus Columbia City (2-5) in a sectional semifinal game. The other bracket in Sectional 19 has Plymouth (4-3) at Angola (6-1) and DeKalb (2-3) at East Noble (6-1).
Triton will load up the bus and head to Caston for an opener in Class 1-A Sectional 43. The Trojans dropped a 6-0 final at Caston in the season opener on Aug. 19. The Trojans sit at 0-7, while Caston sports a 2-5 record. The winner of that game faces the winner of the No. 11 Northfield (6-1) at Southwood (4-3) contest.
The other bracket in Sectional 43 has No. 10 North Miami (7-0) at Culver (5-2) and Fremont (1-6) at No. 12 LaVille (6-1).
Warsaw will face annual sectional nemesis Carroll from Allen County in its opener in Class 6-A sectional 3. The Tigers have won four in a row to improve to 5-2 on the season, while the No. 10 Chargers sit at 5-2. Carroll has ended Warsaw’s season each of the last three years, 49-21 in 2015 and 40-3 in 2014 in first-round sectional contests and by a 42-7 count in 2013 in the sectional title game.
The winner of the Warsaw-Carroll game earns a spot in the sectional finale versus either Homestead (5-2) or Fort Wayne Northrop (1-6).
Whitko, ranked No. 11 in Class 2-A, received a favorable first-round game in a touch Sectional 35. The Wildcats, who ar 6-1, will travel to Albion to face Central Noble, who is 2-5. The winner then meets the winner of the No. 9 Eastside (5-2) versus Churubusco (5-2) game.
The other bracket in Class 2-A Sectional 35 has South Adams (4-3) at Prairie Heights (0-7) and Bluffton (2-5) at No. 1 Woodlan (7-0).
Tippecanoe Valley will play host to West Noble in a Class 3-A Sectional 26 opener. The Vikings are 2-5 after two straight wins, while the Chargers are also 2-5. The winner of that game meets the winner of the No. 12 Jimtown (5-2) versus Heritage (2-5) contest.
The other bracket in Sectional 26 has Garrett (6-1) at Fairfield (1-6) and Culver Academies (5-2) at Lakeland (3-4).
Triton is the local team with the last sectional championship as the Trojans claimed a title in 2008. Wawasee’s last sectional crown came in 2004, while Whitko’s lone sectional title came in its state championship run in 1986 and Valley’s last was in 1992. Warsaw has yet to win a sectional title on the gridiron.
