IHSAA Sets Soccer Sectional Pairings
INDIANAPOLIS – The Warsaw girls soccer team should have plenty of motivation when postseason play commences.
The Tigers, who are having another outstanding season on the pitch, will get to try and avenge last year’s season-ending loss right from the start.
Warsaw, which will play host this year to the Class 2-A sectional the week of Oct. 3-8, will face Culver Academy in the sectional opener at WCHS. The Eagles upset the Tigers 5-4 in the sectional finale last year at Plymouth, ending a run of five straight sectional championships for Warsaw.
The IHSAA held pairings for both the girls and boys state tournaments this morning. The 23rd annual state tourney series will feature sectional action on both fronts the week of Oct. 3-8. Girls regional games in Class 2-A are Oct, 12-15 and just Oct. 15 in Class 1-A with boys regional contests scheduled for Oct. 13 and 15.
Semistate matchups will play out for both the girls and boys on Oct. 22. The four State Finals games will be contested on Oct. 29 in Indianapolis.
The Warsaw girls, who are ranked No. 18 in the latest Class 2-A coaches poll, are on a roll right now. Coach Peter Lucht’s team sits at 11-3 and have won nine straight matches since going 0-3 in the South Bend St. Joseph Tournament in late August.
The Tigers, who are undefeated in Northern Lakes Conference play at 5-0, have two big league games left to end their regular season. Warsaw hosts county rival Wawasee on Saturday morning and then travels to Class 2-A No. 12 Northridge next Thursday night to face the Raiders, who are also still undefeated in NLC action.
The winner of the Warsaw Sectional advances to the Goshen Regional to face the winner of the South Bend Riley Sectional. No. 1 ranked Penn, which defeated Warsaw at the St. Joe tourney, is the huge favorite at Riley. The Kingsmen were Class 2-A state runner-up last year.
Whitko will face Eastbrook in the opening game of the girls sectional at Blackford.
The Warsaw boys team, which is 4-8-2 on the season, will also face Culver Academy in their sectional opener. The pair will square off in the Class 2-A Plymouth Sectional. Wawasee will face NorthWood with Plymouth taking on the Warsaw-CMA winner. The Plymouth Sectional champion will advance to the South Bend Adams Regional to face the winner of the Penn Sectional.
The Whitko boys team will play host Fort Wayne Blackhawk Christian in a four-team Class 1-A sectional.
Tippecanoe Valley will play its first-ever sectional game in the Class 1-A Argos Sectional. The Vikings will meet Bremen in a first-round matchup. Lakeland Christian Academy will face Culver in a semifinal game at the six-team sectional at Argos.
The girls and boys semi states for Class 2-A will be at Warsaw and at South Bend St. Joseph’s. The Class 1-A semistate hosts will be Argos and LaVille.
