Dragons Erupt, End Cubs’ Win Streak
DAYTON, Ohio – Nick Senzel doubled three times, driving in two runs as the Dayton Dragons beat the South Bend Cubs 13-0 on Saturday.
Josciel Veras homered and singled with four RBIs and two runs for Dayton.
In the bottom of the first, Dayton put up eight runs, including a three-run home run by Veras. The Dragons then added four runs in the fifth and a run in the sixth. In the fifth, Veras hit an RBI single and Senzel hit an RBI double, while James Vasquez scored on a ground out in the sixth.
Dayton starter Ty Boyles (4-8) picked up the win after allowing three hits over 5 2/3 scoreless innings. Opposing starter Justin Steele (5-6) took the loss in the Midwest League game after giving up eight runs and eight hits while only recording two outs.
The Cubs were held scoreless for the fifth time this season, while the Dragons’ staff recorded their seventh shutout of the year. The loss also ended South Bend’s six-game win streak.
Despite the loss, South Bend is 12-4 against Dayton this season, in which the Cubs had won the past six games of the series against the Dragons. The two teams will square off again Sunday at 2 p.m.
