Town & Country State: Championship Monday
FRANKTON – Championship Monday capped off a week of Town & Country state baseball tournaments around northern Indiana. The 8U title game at Mentone, the 10U at Frankton and the 12U at Flora all wrapped up Monday evening with title tilts.
Locally, New Paris won the 10U title, backing up its semi-state championship with an 8-6 win over Williamsport. The top seed from the north, New Paris, went 4-0 in the state finals tourney, but had to rally in the championship as Williamsport owned a 5-4 lead in the fourth inning. The two teams were tied at six heading into the final inning, only for New Paris to scratch across two runs while Williamsport came up empty.
New Paris barely made it into the semi-state round, needing to win a fifth-place game against Bremen in districts just to make the next round. But from there, the Dukes were untouchable, winning five straight at semi-state and four straight at state to finish 11-2 overall in the Town & County tournament.
At Mentone, Ole Miss walked off with a 9-8 win over Frankfort. Ole Miss took an early 3-0 lead only for Frankfort to claim a 7-5 lead after four played. Ole Miss battled back to tie the game at eight and got the winner in the bottom of the sixth. Ole Miss, which entered the state tourney as a four-seed, went 5-0 and knocked off both number-one seeds Rochester and Frankfort as well as host Mentone in their home ballpark in its quest.
At Flora, the older Ole Miss group scored 27 runs in its first two games, the shut out Mentone 3-0 Sunday and held off Flora, 6-4, for the title. A four-run cushion in the first inning helped the top seed in the tourney take advantage and only three Flora runs in the sixth inning made the scoreline closer than it was. Ole Miss went 4-0 to rampage the bracket.
