WARSAW – Without giving as much as a shrug, BuckWyld Barbie just zipped on through. Despite a noticeable size advantage in blockers for the South Bend Plan B’s, Barbie and her Lake City Roller Dolls used its team speed to cruise around and past the B’s to a 197-110 roller derby win Saturday night at the Doll House at Hansen’s Eastlake Skate Center.
Bringing in a very big lineup that featured the imposing height and overall size of Rainbow Blight and Andrea Pierce, South Bend looked as though it would create all sorts of problems for Lake City’s jammers. Barbie, even on skates, stood nearly a foot shorter than the big blockers, but like a guided missile, pierced the gaps and got the Dolls going.
The Roller Dolls held just a 10-6 lead early on, but with Barbie’s jams, soon took a 46-17 lead. The Dolls would go on a 25-4 run to end the first half, taking a 105-47 lead into the break.
“We figured out early that if we were going to score big, we needed to get to the front,” Barbie said. “We couldn’t break up their walls so we let them break themselves up.
“They had a lot of power and a lot of size. Lake City is a smaller team, especially compared to South Bend, but we used that speed that we have to our advantage tonight. There were times tonight when we felt a little pressure from them catching up, but we had a lot of good skaters out there tonight jamming and blocking well. This was a really good win for us.”
While South Bend couldn’t stop Barbie and friends from scoring almost at will, the Dolls’ blockers themselves were putting in work to hold up the lead. Plan B’s Ninja did what she could to keep her team in it, even scoring 15 straight points on her own, but only was able to get her team within 65 points as Lake City would continue to collect points in bunches into the depths of the bout.
BuckWyld Barbie was named the MVP Jammer of the bout for Lake City while teammate Spiteful was the MVP Blocker. Ninja and Betty Fhite were the MVP jammer and blocker for South Bend.
The bout for Lake City was the first home appearance of the season, with the Dolls opening with four straight roadies going back to March. The team will compete again Aug. 13 in Fishers before closing out the ledger at home with a pair in September and October.
Proceeds from the bout Saturday night will be donated to the Hoosier Burn Camp, which is near and dear to several on the Roller Dolls’ roster.
“Myself and Suzi Slamahoe, our families both have been touched by burns,” Barbie said, choking up as her son has needed the Hoosier Burn Camp. “My son and my sister both were burned when they were real young, so it was really important to us. We understand the struggles going through it.”
