FORT WAYNE — According to a recent study by WalletHub, Fort Wayne ranks among the top 100 metro areas that, demographically, most represent the U.S. overall.
Researchers at WalletHub looked at the 379 most populated metro areas in the U.S. Of these, Fort Wayne ranked number 93, while Indianapolis came in at number one. Other Indiana cities studied included South Bend/Mishawaka, coming in at number 131; Evansville, number 169; Terre Haute, number 200; Michigan City/LaPorte, number 221; Elkhart/Goshen, number 245; Muncie, number 321; Lafayette/West Lafayette, number 325; and Bloomington, number 366.
Metro areas from other states overlapping into Indiana were Cincinatti, Ohio, Louisville/Jefferson County, Ky., Chicago/Naperville/Elgin, Ill. The Washington/Arlington/Alexandria D.C./Va./W.V./Md. area ranked low on the list at number 326.
Metro areas were categorized by population size. Factors looked at included gender, age, race, household makeup, population with health insurance coverage, housing tenure, median house price, income, wealth gap and educational attainment. These were weighed to see which were closest and which were farthest away from the U.S. reference value.
Results from each of the above categories were then compared with national averages to come up with individual rankings for each metro area.
