Championship Monday: Baseball Sectional Results
A look around the area baseball sectional championship games.
Class 4-A at Penn:
Penn 6, Elkhart Memorial 5
Luke Schneider had the walk-off single for the defending state champion Kingsmen, which had to rally from a 5-0 deficit. Memorial posted five runs in the first inning off starter Skylar Szynski, highlighted by a three-run homer from Jon Bailey.
Class 4-A at South Bend Clay:
Mishawaka 5, Plymouth 1
The Cavemen will force a rematch with its bitter rivals in the second game of the LaPorte Regional. Penn won the lone matchup between the two clubs, 5-3, on May 13.
Class 3-A at Lakeland:
NorthWood 18, Fairfield 2
NorthWood posted consecutive innings of seven runs to open the game, the 14-0 barrage too much for any Falcons comeback. NorthWood wins its fifth sectional title in six years and tenth sectional overall. The Panthers will meet Fort Wayne Dwenger in the Bellmont Regional this weekend.
Class 2-A at Wabash:
Manchester 7, Oak Hill 4
Riley Rickert scored three runs for the Squires while Hayes Stutsman doubled, tripled and drove in two runs for Manchester, which wins its first sectional since 2005. At the Wabash Regional, Manchester will meet Frankton in the second game of the day.
Class 2-A at Westview:
Bremen 7, Westview 6
In a wild 10-inning affair, Bremen plated a run in the final inning and held on to repeat as sectional champions. Bremen will get Adams Central in the morning game of the Whiting Regional.
Class 1-A at Bethany Christian:
Fort Wayne Blackhawk 16, Fremont 2
Blackhawk won two games Saturday, first knocking off Triton by a dime, 11-1, then trouncing Fremont by two touchdowns in the afternoon championship game. The Braves have won 14 sectional titles in 16 years. At the Caston Regional, Blackhawk will get North White in the second game.
Class 1-A at LaVille:
South Central 2, Culver 1
Max Sims had the game-winning RBI for the Satellites in the seventh inning to knock off the Cavaliers. Everett Krueger had a strong game for Culver in defeat, striking out nine on the hill and rapping three hits at the plate. South Central will face defending regional champion Washington Township in the first game of the Caston Regional.
