Mason Metzger

WARSAW — Mason Metzger, a Warsaw Community High School junior, is one step closer to his dream.

After listening to a presentation about the Warsaw Community School Corporation mission statement, “To inspire and equip all students to continuously acquire and apply knowledge and skills while pursuing their dreams and enriching the lives of others,” Metzger, with the help of WCS staff, began the pursuit of his dream — motivational speaking.

After speaking for several local schools and events, Metzger was selected by the Indiana Council for Exceptional Children as the 2015 recipient of the “Yes I Can” award.

“One of the most remarkable characteristics of Mason is his positive outlook on life,” wrote Metzger’s nominator and Grace College professor, Dr. Cheryl Bremer. “He has the most amazing, cheerful disposition of any teenager I know. He gives an encouraging word and a smile to everyone he meets. His mantra is to look for the positive in everything he sees and he lives this out in his daily life.”

Metzger was recognized for his accomplishments as a motivational speaker, his work with Grace College’s CEC student chapter and positive outlook on life.

The award aims to celebrate the achievements of children and youth with exceptionalities, encourage these individuals to seek their highest potential and increase public awareness of the abilities, aspirations and personal qualities of those with disabilities.

“Mason Metzger lives the Warsaw Community Schools mission as he pursues his dream to be a motivational speaker and to be a shining light to the world,” stated Lorinda Kline, WCS instructional coach. “WCS is thrilled for Mason. He inspires and equips our community to be a better place for all. He embodies the ‘yes, I can’ attitude.”

Metzger is now in the running for the national “Yes I Can” award. He resides in Silver Lake with his parents, Micah and Carissa Metzger, and his younger sister, Avery. Metzger has cerebral palsy and utilizes a wheelchair. He enjoys water skiing, riding his hand powered bicycle and recently participated in the Limitless Race.

Metzger has spoken at Grace College chapel, the WCS opening day ceremony, North Webster Elementary School, Lincoln Elementary School, freshman orientation at WCHS and is scheduled to speak at Franklin College this spring.
