Local Veterans Receive Warm Recognition
WARSAW — Three local veterans received a warm gift Friday afternoon, Feb. 12, at Kosciusko County Senior Services.
Guests of honor included David White, who served with the Marines during Vietnam and Malcolm Case, who served with the Navy during World War II. Sherman Coy Jr., who served with the Army during World War II, was also invited but unable to attend.
Kathy Snell organized the project and members of the Liberty Sewing Circle, which meets at the senior center, worked to create three unique quilts, one for each veteran. The quilt presented to White held special meaning, as it was made by the sister of a Marine who served in Vietnam and who passed away.
“She wanted this to be dedicated to a deserving Vietnam Marine veteran,” Snell told White. “She wanted it specifically to go to you.”
Warsaw Mayor Joseph Thallemer briefly addressed those gathered and talked about his experiences accompanying his father on an Honor Flight to Washington, D.C., where he was able to view the numerous memorials, a reminder of the many sacrifices made over the years.
White and Case each thanked those involved for honoring them.
Following the presentation, a reception followed with coffee and refreshments.
The Liberty Sewing Circle has made quilts for 62 veterans in Warsaw alone. They have also donated quilts to the veterans’ home in West Lafayette and to homeless veterans in this area. They invited anyone who knows a veteran who could use a little warmth to contact them through Kosciusko County Senior Services.
